Dock Levelers: Manual or Hydraulic Dock Levelers?

Dock levelers bridge the gap between a truck and the dock or warehouse floor. Their adjustable platform ensures a smooth transition between the loading dock and truck, preventing serious injuries and damage.

Some of the different types of dock levelers are hydraulic dock levelers and manual dock levelers. The biggest difference between the two dock levelers is cost. Typically a hydraulic dock leveler will be much more costly than a manual dock leveler.

Manual Dock Levelers

Manual dock levelers are spring-loaded and require manually pulling the release chain to lift the leveler. This allows a smooth transition for forklifts to load and unload shipments. Although efficient, manual dock levelers require manual lifting which pose a higher safety risk.

Hydraulic Dock Levelers

Hydraulic dock levelers are much simpler to operate. These dock levelers are operated by a push-button station. This allows the user to control the dock leveler more safely. Additional, hydraulic dock levelers provide a higher weight capacity than manual dock levelers.

Both types of dock levelers should be maintained regularly to ensure they continue to function efficiently. General Door offers a preventative maintenance program that includes a thorough cleaning to ensure there is no debris obstructing the dock leveler operation.
